Lumber Now Available

Lillington Farms now includes a saw mill and solar kiln to custom cut lumber from your logs or ours. A wide selection of oak and pine lumber is already cut, dried and available for sale.

Just as our ducks are the most loved you will find, so is our lumber. Everything is cut within a few months of felling the tree, then immediately cleaned, stacked, and placed in the solar kiln for slow drying to less than 8% water content. This make the lumber ideal for interior use (e.g., furniture, toys, art work).

Fact or Myth, Duck Eggs Are Better for Baking

It’s not a myth. Duck eggs really are better for baking. The following comes from blog.doingsciencetostuff.com

“Both of the cake layers were nearly the same temperature when removed from the oven (206°F for the chicken-egg layer, 204°F for the duck-egg). The height of the finished cakes were slightly different, with the duck egg version obtaining slightly higher maximum elevation (1.31″ vs. 1.25″). For taste testing, Brownie Master P and Co-blogger/Science conspirator F were presented with the finished & dressed cake, and were not informed about the layer identities. Both “blind” testers , preferred what was the duck-egg layer. It was determined that there were no obvious textural difference, but the there was a slight flavor difference, with the duck egg layer being considered more flavorful. “

Duck Eggs for Gluten Free Baking

Baking gluten free can be a challenge. You want the people you love to have the best, despite the need to keep gluten out of their diet. Duck eggs are just the thing. Take it from Annaliese Keller on EdibleParadise.com, “For gluten free baking, duck eggs are excellent. The added protein in the albumin (whites) binds the gluten free ingredients better and improves the texture considerably.”

Predator Protected with Room to Roam

All our ducks spend the night protected from predators.  Evenings are the most dangerous time for ducks. Owls, foxes, and other crafty animals would just love to get their claws or paws on our beautiful ducks. Trapping would be unkind, so we make our aviaries impenetrable fortresses.  We have one of the largest private aviaries in North Carolina, over 21.000 cubic feet.

During the daylight hours, our Khaki Campbell and Pekin ducks wander the property free to explore as they please.
